At Festa dello Scambio this year, please remember to pay a visit to our year 8 students, who will be selling a newspaper that they produced themselves. They should be easy to find, either at a stand under an Acorn News sign, or coming to you as part of a mobile sales team.
The newspaper will also allow you free access to one of the screenings of our parallel project with Year 7, who created a 45 minute TV news show for you to watch, the times of which will be publicised closer to the event.
The journalism project is a practical way for students to understand how news is produced and presented, giving them a chance to improve their language skills, and teaching them an appreciation for and an understanding of the lengths to which journalists go to keep us informed in these media rich times we live in.
Some might even say that we are saturated with news and information in this modern world of ours. This project helps children become more discerning readers and interpreters of the news, because only when you really get inside something can you truly understand it and appreciate it. It helps them understand why accurate, fairly presented news is important and precious. The paper is a mix of current international affairs as well as local news and sport, often drawing on the experiences and expertise of our families, our friends and the students themselves.
This year it has the added aspect of incorporating elements that highlight the school’s commitment to the UN’s Agenda 2030. We are sure you will show them that their work and efforts are appreciated, as you always do.
