Green – To start our exploration of the colour green, we looked at the beautiful story of two best friends ‘Little blue and Little yellow, who turned green when they hugged. The Pre schoolers represented the characters with blue and yellow playdough and then mixed them to make green. They also mixed yellow and blue paint and made green water by mixing blue and yellow food colouring. During our weekly ‘Cooking Lab’ we decided to make pesto and the children were very helpful with the prep work of picking the pesto leaves and washing and drying them. We then added all the other ingredients to the blender and each took home a portion of yummy pesto. We read the story of the ‘5 little green frogs’ and made frog headbands to role-play the story and the song.
Spring – Everyone brought in a beautiful flower plant for ‘Show-and-tell’ which we planted outside the classroom and the children are always keen to water their plants. We talked about how the weather varies in Spring where it can be sunny or rainy or windy (or all three in one day) and the children enjoy going out for walks with their umbrellas and jumping in puddles.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, is an all time favourite book and talks about the ‘growth and change’ of a little caterpillar which turns in a beautifully colourful butterfly. It also teaches and reinforces colours, counting, days of the week and food names. The children had a go at creating their own caterpillars, first with playdough, then as a collage and finally during ‘Cooking lab’ using cucumber, tomatoes, carrots and raisins. The were able to represent the story in the correct sequence using laminated props and made their very own colourful butterflies.
Scavenger hunts – We went on a scavenger hunt around the school grounds and used our senses to look for, listen to, smell and touch ‘Springs things’. We also talked about ‘Minibeasts’ and decided to search for them outdoors using our magnifying glasses and found ants, spiders, worms, centipedes, flies and butterflies.
Number fun – we have been focusing on number recognition, counting and matching objects to numerals and the children really enjoyed playing number Bingo. On the last day of school we celebrated Samuel’s 4th birthday and then had an ‘Easter Egg Hunt’; the children were very happy to find the mini chocolate eggs which they got to take home.
