During the first two weeks of November we explored the topic of ‘Changing Seasons-Autumn’. To start off, we focused on making the colour ‘orange’ by mixing red and yellow water, paint and playdough. We strolled through the school grounds to look at the beautiful Autumn colours and collected lots of leaves, twigs and acorns for our creative crafts in class. We talked about the changes in the weather and the important of dressing warmer and using waterproof clothing. The children wear their rain suits, rain boots almost every day and are now learning how to put on their jackets by themselves.
We mixed the three primary colours to make brown and used it to paint a hedgehog template and then added dry leaves to the hedgehog’s body. We used the twigs and leaves to make an Autumn nature picture and a star shaped wand. The children’s fine motor skills are being developed consistently and they used pincers to sort pompoms according to colour and enjoyed playing with ‘loose parts’ such as chestnuts, acorns and wooden rings. They all brought Autumnal items from home for ‘Show-and-tell’ and practised math skills such as counting and matching numerals 0-5 with chestnuts and acorns.
Everyone really enjoyed hammering golf tees into a big pumpkin and then stretched the elastics from one golf tee to another. We then decided to open the pumpkin to see what was inside; the children scooped out all the seeds and put them in water which turned orange. After the seeds were all cleaned and dried, we used them for play in the home corner kitchen.
During cooking lab we made fresh orange juice as well as some yummy chocolate and honey cornflake cakes. The children have been regularly practising doing puzzles and are proud of their achievements.
Our project for the next two weeks is ‘About Us’ which follows on from our first project ‘About Me’. We look forward to sharing the power point presentation with you all.
