The season is AUTUMN which means many changes for us to go out and explore in the school grounds. Preschool have learnt how to dress themselves in their boots, rain suits and coats so that they can stay protected from the sometimes wet and muddy weather that the season brings. We observed how the leaves have changed colours and fallen to the floor, and found many acorns, chestnuts and worms.
We collected autumn materials from around the school and used them to make crafts. This was great practice for fine motor skills as well as creativity.
We used sticks, leaves, acorns, stones and chestnuts to make autumn sensory trays and were interested to see which objects passed through the sieves and funnels and which ones were too big.
And then we used them as loose parts to follow shapes and patterns, which is a great way to develop pre-writing skills.
We explored autumn colours by mixing red and yellow to make orange, primary colours to make brown, and stamping green, red and yellow leaves onto tree outlines.
We loved playing with pumpkins, feeling how they were heavy, hard on the outside and soft on the outside. We tried hammering pegs into them, cutting with wooden knifes and scooping the seeds out. After taking out the seeds we washed them (turning the water orange!) and dried them to use in loose parts play and crafts.
We practised counting and number recognition by counting out acorns. The children recognised that 3 was their birthday number!
We also had some puzzle practice by doing 9 piece seasonal puzzles.
During carpet time we shared autumn objects that we had found outside of school with our families in show and tell, and had a mystery orange bag. This contained a very tickly orange feather!
And in our cooking sessions we made orange juice!
