During October Preschool Yellow have been learning through play by exploring farmyard animals!
We engaged in some creative activities, making paper plate pigs and mixing different colours to make brown “mud” for the farm animals to get messy in. Afterwards we cleaned them off with some sponge and water play, too.
We also made some woolly sheep. As well as exercising creativity this activity is great for practising listening and attention skills, as the children need to follow step by step instructions from the teacher.
At circle time we read The Three Billy Goats Gruff, a story about a small, a medium and a large goat that cross over a troll’s bridge to get to the green grass on the other side. Then we enjoyed a construction and role play activity in which we built bridges and acted out the three goats crossing over, saying “Trip, trap, trip, trap”. As we did this we talked about the mathematical concepts of big, medium and small, by comparing the sizes of our toy goats to the ones in the book.
We fed our farm animals during bean and lentil sensory play. When funnels were introduced we noticed that some were small enough to pass through, but some were too big and got stuck!
The class engaged really well in a scissor practice activity where we cut away grass to see which farm animal was hiding behind it.
During another role play activity we played as vets and took turns to cure some poorly animals!
As well as some games recognising and sorting farm animals and numbers.
