Pre-school to Reception is such a big step! Let’s have a look at what we have learnt this month.
Literacy:
Reception has been familiarising themselves with letters by forming their names with pebbles and loose parts. Gaining confidence in letter recognition is the foundation they need that will springboard them onto writing.
Looking for and matching letters requires a lot of concentration! 😀
The children build their own name, bridging recognition and writing.
Fine motor skills:
We also worked on our fine motor skills.
UDA ‘Super me’
Super me is a project that intends to build children’s self-esteem and self-awareness.
Super Sally is the classroom mascot, she likes to tell children what they are good at and give them lots of snuggles.
We drew and coloured in a big colour monster inspired from the book The Colour Monster.
It’s okay to be DIFFERENT – we understood we all look different and we all like different things.
In pairs, children drew portraits of each other.
Self-esteem shield – Super Sally helped the children to think about what they are good at and they then drew a picture of that activity.
We developed our self-esteem through a version of Freeze. In this case, when the music stopped, the children had to follow certain instructions. We worked on being independent, learning to take our shoes off and on, putting our rain suit on and being tidy while doing it. It is, of course, a work in progress. 😀
Maths:
We learnt to sort by colour, size and even by numbers!
Colour sorting:
Counting:
There are so many ways to develop number recognition and counting. We enjoy using loose parts a lot and explore the many different ways we can make a number.
In our maths corner, children always have the sand tray available for some digging and learning. (Super Sally is there too!)
Bingo
Number recognition (0-6). Bingo is a great hands-on activity for children to develop their language skills as well as their numeracy skills.

Patterns:
PE, Music and cooking
Mr Alberto and Mr Davide have so many things for us to explore and play with. We are strengthening our gross motor skills and developing our sense of rhythm.
Making smoothies. Ms Niky talked to us about the fruit being used.
Bananas and wild berries. Where do they grow? What do they taste like? What do they smell like?
A delicious way of learning about healthy foods.
See you next time for more!
