For the past few weeks of Preschool our topics have been linked. We have been learning about our physical bodies, our five senses and our emotions. We were also happy to welcome a new friend Leo to the class!
We started off learning about our bodies by designing our own people and faces by gluing, arranging, drawing and observing:
And practised pencil grip and control with worksheets that show straight, wavy and curly hair:
We read some books about our bodies:
We talked about which foods are healthy and which ones are less healthy, and the children like to remind me “Not too much chocolate!”:
We drew around our bodies and identified different body parts and where they are:
And made some people shaped biscuits:
The class loved dancing to these action songs and seeing how they made our hearts beat and our bodies hot and tired! Walking Walking / Shake Your Sillies Out
We explored each sense, with things to feel, hear, see, smell and taste. These included biscuits, minty toothpaste, feathers, shakers, touch and feel books, soft wool, velcro, natural objects and hot and cold water.
We engaged our sense of TOUCH by painting our hands to make handprint pictures. The paint felt cold and slimy!
And so did the spaghetti on a sensory walk! There was also cornflour, water, pom poms and stones:
And on Earth Day we used TOUCH and SIGHT to learn about how we recycle different materials. We discovered that usually metal objects are cold and silver, plastic is smooth and colourful, and paper is thin and rougher.
We found some of these different materials outside too, and talked about which ones are natural and which aren’t.
Then we made shakers with cups, rice and beans, which made lots of noise to HEAR:
We explored SMELL and TASTE by taste testing a range of foods. Strawberries were popular, but lemons and garlic not so much!
And we made some tasty frozen yoghurt fruit cups too:
For maths we engaged our senses of TOUCH and SIGHT. First by making numbers with squishy playdoh, and then by having a number hunt in the treehouse:
The children had the opportunity to capture what they SEE in school by taking photos with a camera:
And we had a closer LOOK with some magnifying glasses:
We discussed our FEELINGS, and read a book called The Colour Monster, which links colours to emotions. Yellow for happy, blue for sad, red for angry, green for calm, black for scared, and pink for love.

We had a go at looking in the mirror to make emotional faces too:
Our next topic is Under the Sea!
