Preschool Yellow spent a week looking at all the different colours, before focusing on green in particular. We started off with CARNIVAL, a very colourful festival. The children made masks, cut out spiral decorations for the class, and enjoyed carnival snacks in their costumes.
We looked around the room to see what colours we could find, and practiced pencil control by colouring rainbows.
We enjoyed reading a story about a multicoloured elephant called Elmer. One day Elmer is sad because he is not normal elephant colour so he rolls in grey berries to trick everybody, but when it rains his true colours come back! The preschoolers used their fine motor skills to make their own Elmers, by cutting squares and sticking them down.
Then we role played the story by painting some colourful elephants grey, then washing the paint away!
We also revisited an activity from the All About Me topic from the beginning of the year, where the children could choose a colour to try and trace their name. Since September some of their favourite colours have changed, and their control has developed!
In gym we played a game where the class had to race to fetch whichever coloured hoop I shouted. We then had lots of fun learning how to carefully roll them down the hill and run after them. This was great for practicing patience and control, as if they pushed the hoops too strongly they would fall flat.
During cooking lab we mixed multicoloured sprinkles into yogurts, and noticed that the white yoghurt became coloured too.
There was another celebration, as Ginevra turned 4! We made her a birthday hat, playdoh birthday cake and had a picnic outside.
As spring is beginning to arrive we moved our focus to GREEN. We played the I see something green game and took turns to search the room for green objects. We used green pom poms, lollopop sticks, paper and feathers that we found to make a green collage to hang on the wall.
And we experimented with making green by mixing blue and yellow.
We painted paper plates green and red, and glued on eyes to make frogs, which enjoyed eating spiders!
Outside during gym, we practiced hopping over cones like frogs.
And in forest school we used fine motor skills by making a decoration for the classroom with pegs, string and green natural objects that we found.
Otherwise during this time, we have been practicing letter recognition. The preschoolers can recognise their own names, and when they cut the letters out and rearranged them they noticed that this changed the words and sounds. They were also able to work together to match some animals to their names. Well done Preschool Yellow!
