Literacy-We started of exploring the topic of ‘transport’ by looking at books and flashcards and talking about the types of transport we have used and whether they operate on land, sea or air.
We painted car tracks on A3 pages with different colours and then made a display with these about ‘The Little Coloured Train’. The children practised their fine motor skills by tearing red, yellow and green tissue paper and gluing them in the correct order on to the traffic light worksheet. They also practised doing puzzles, tracing the lines on pencil control worksheets and threading with pasta wheels!
Sensorial – The children had lots of fun playing with the small world vehicles in the cornflour sensorial tray and in the sandbox where they made tracks. We incorporated some math into our play by making long and short trains, tracing numbers with our finger, matching counters to numbers and looking at the numbers on licence plates in the school car park!
Role Play: the children were very enthusiastic about playing traffic wardens using the STOP & GO signs; we made an obstacle course using traffic cones which they zig-zagged through on foot and then on bicycles. We made individual drivers licences and bus tickets which the children had to show when stopped by a warden!
Song time & role-play: We role-played our favourite songs ‘The wheels on the bus, Row your boat, The animals are on the train and ‘Hear the aeroplane’. We also practised crossing the lane by ‘stopping’, then listening, then looking left & right before crossing. Arts & crafts: We decided to make paper plate sail boats and wooden stick aeroplanes which the children brought home.
Lastly, to celebrate Valentine’s Day we made beautiful heart shaped hanging decorations from cardboard and some yummy cookies to share at home!
