This month in year 1 we have been learning to write a traditional tale – The Little Red Hen. We have been using the Talk 4 Writing approach. This approach focuses on the children memorizing a story so that they can retell it verbally before they write it. They use actions to help them remember the words. This is important because we cannot expect children to write sentences correctly if they cant speak them correctly. The children performed the story as a class and then worked in groups to role play the story, with each child playing a different character. The masks they created at home for homework were great and made the children feel like real performers! Thank you parents for your time and effort.

After memorizing the story, the children all created their own story maps to retell their story using pictures. They then changed the characters in their story to make it their own. In class, we changed ‘the little red hen’ to the ‘the big green dinosaur’. The children all had wonderful ideas for their own stories.
Finally, we have spent the last few days writing our story. I have been amazed at the children’s independence when writing, they followed their story maps and used the actions to help them remember what sentences to write. Without any help from the teacher, the children were able to apply their knowledge of the story, alongside their phonics and tricky words knowledge to write a 5 page long story! Yes that’s right, 5 full pages! It looks like we have a lot of future authors in year 1…
