As you know, Year 3 have recently visited the beautiful town of Sperlonga. We all had an outstanding time and the teachers were blown away with the children’s fantastic behaviour.
Day One
After we arrived at the Mayor Hotel, the children got a chance to explore their bedroom. They felt really grown up being able to relax and unpack in their room with their classmates.
After seeing the hotel, we all went for our first walk on the beach. The children ate their lunch and spent some time making sandcastles, writing their names in the sand and digging extremely deep holes!
Next, we walked along the beach to the archaeological area of the Grotta di Tiberio. We all had a guided tour around the museum and learned lots of interesting facts and myths. The children were all eager to share their previous knowledge with their tour guide…she was impressed. We were able to explore a cave that was once a very luxurious swimming pool and lounge area. The museum itself has the primary objective to preserve and show to the public the surviving sculptures, many of which, as has been mentioned, of extraordinary historical and artistic value: this happens just a few meters from the place where they were exposed in origin.
Day Two
The children all slept extremely well during our first night away from home. They were revitalized and ready for day two’s activities. We visited The Circeo Park so that the children could see the former school for families in the pre-reclamation forest area. They really enjoyed comparing and contrasting their school to the one they were learning about in the forest. They also got the amazing opportunity to have a go at archery. They were all much better than Miss Beth and Miss Stella.
In the afternoon, we travelled to the Cerasella wildlife area so the children could see the remaining swamp land that used to take up so much of the landscape in that area. The children got into small groups of three and used a net to investigate the types on living things living within the swamp. Later they used microscopes to look at the creatures they had found.
Day Three
On day three, we visited Piana delle Orme and had a guided tour of the museum. The tour was about the historical course on the evolution of everyday life conditions in the Pontine Marshes pre and post Reclamation.
We then managed to squeeze some time for ice cream!
We all had an outstanding time and it was a great learning experience for the children.
