In Early Years we aim to focus on developing and refining children’s fine motor skills daily and there are many fun and interesting ways in which this can be achieved. The children love to work with buttons, pegs, pincers, eye droppers, threading, puzzles and small construction blocks. These activities are important to help develop concentration skills, where children focus for a determined amount of time.
We are also focusing on initial math and phonics activities in preparaton for entry in to Reception in Spetember such as number recognition (0-5) and learning letter sounds. On Tuesday 26th we had a ‘Jolly Phonics’ workshop with the preschoolers and their parents which enabled them to share a special learning moment together. It provided parents the opportunity to listen to and practie letter sounds so that their children’s learning and development can be further supported at home.
In preparation for Valentine’s day, the children made and decorated cardboard heart shapes and took in heart shaped objects/toys from home for our weekly ‘Show-and-tell’ activity.
The last week of February was all about Carnival. The children decorated masks by finger painting with bright colours and on Thursday they came dressed in costume for our class party. There were lots of super hereos (such as spidermen, superman, the Incredibles), Minnie Mouse, busy bees, ladybugs, princesses and even a sweet dragon!
During the month of March we will be exploring ‘transpor’t and ‘opposites’. See you all soon!
