For the past few weeks we have been studying the well known story ‘The Rainbow Fish’. This is a book by Marcus Pfister about a beautiful fish who finds friendship and happiness when he learns to share. Described as ‘the most beautiful fish in the entire ocean’, the fish initially refuses to share his scales as he considers them too precious. He soon realizes that not sharing and not being kind to his friends means he is ‘the loneliest fish in the ocean’. In the end, the Rainbow Fish shares his scales and learns an important lesson, that friendship makes you the happiest of all. We thought this was an excellent book to use to promote children’s social and emotional development and we have been using this book and the characters feelings as a reference when disagreements occur in the classroom. We will also be singing a song from The Rainbow Fish movie as part of our Christmas performance. This song is called ‘giving makes you special’. We thought that this was extremely relevant at Christmas time.
As part of this topic, we have completed a range of crafts which you have probably seen in the classroom. The children worked hard on a rainbow fish collage, a paper chain octopus and the ocean dioramas.
We have also been working extremely hard for the past few weeks to create Christmas decorations and Christmas cards, because as we’ve learned, ‘giving makes you special’.
