Mount Mayon is an active volcano in the Philippines, located on the island of Luzon, which is also known for its shape, as the “perfect cone”. Thanks to its characteristics and to its location, the ground around it became a national park in 1938 ,which has contributed to the rise of tourism. Unfortunately, this volcano has an eruptive history. Nowadays, the eruptions are increasing and the Philippine population is worried because many people have been killed before… The last recorded eruption was in 2014. However, it is starting to wake up and could also cause an earthquake. Recently, it has begun sweeping ash and rocks, and due to this, most of the citizens are evacuating the nearby cities and villages. Furthermore, all schools are closed because of the raining ash which has led to almost zero visibility in some areas.
The Philippines has over 22 different volcanoes because of its position near the Ring of Fire, which is an area characterised by frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The United States has given some money to the evacuees of Mount Mayon; however, it is still a great problem because of the threat to tourism.
The chief volcanologist Renato Solidum has expanded the permanent danger zone to eight kilometres, forcing more families and citizens out of their homes. Mr Solidum also announced, “The public is reminded to observe the danger zone – not to panic, but in essence just be ready. Prepare either gas masks, handkerchiefs or clothes to prevent inhalation of fine ash.”
In conclusion, there is a big problem leading up to this eruption; most of the citizens are terrorized . This volcano killed 1200 people in 1814, which is not a number to be taken lightly.
