In Year 2 we went for a journey to discover animals’ features and habitats on the other side of the world form the end of April to the second week of June.
We got excited when we used technology to explore Australia topic to broaden our knowledge about the world we live in.
We saw lots of interesting, short documentaries and read non fiction books from the school library. We wanted to know more about Australian animals and discussed how to share our findings with our friends and families.
So children learnt to write informative texts to examine and convey the information acquired clearly and accurately, through effective selection, organisation and analysis of specific articles’ contents.
Year 2 students developed and strengthen their writing abilities by:
- working in pairs
- reading closely to determine what the text says explicitly
- determining central ideas of a text; verbally summarising the key elements, details and ideas.
- interpreting words and phrases as they are used in a text
- using various text features (e.g., captions, subheadings, glossaries, to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently
- highlighting interesting words in their National Geographic -Kids articles
- building their own word bank and writing plan, connecting the two instruments with matching colours
- going through the writing process cycle at their pace, with guidance and support from adults and peers, focusing on a chosen topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing.
- celebrating the work done
- having lots of fun, whilst learning
If you want to understand in detail how all these and so many others learning objectives were reached within this project experience, you are welcome to have a look inside our project’s presentation, published here below.
We hope you will enjoy it as much as we did, when working together on Australia Topic in Year 2 classes, during 2016/2017 – Spring/Summer Term.
