Middle School: End of year
This year marks the end of an extremely memorable time together, which saw us see again some semblance of normality. The Hamlet and Richard III plays saw students put in a tremendous amount of work, under the boiling hot sun. These plays were testimony to the fact that the students have come an extremely long way in terms of their English, being able to recite some of the most precious words in the English language. Having worked with the children for three weeks on these plays, the teachers saw how the students work outside of the classroom. There were many children who became dependable members of a team who work towards a common goal. Some children were so incredibly reliable and hard-working, that they inspired the highest respect from their teachers.
For those who did not see the boards at the end of the “festa dello scambio”, the students completed some truly remarkable work this year. What marvellous culture can be found in this school! The students completed some stimulating written works about some of the best literature ever written, some intricate history essays and projects, as well as a host of other academically exceptional projects across both curricula. The level of erudition modelled by every single teacher at this school is rare, and I would like to thank my colleagues for being world-class academics in their field who know what it means to think critically, light the flame of knowledge, and be more than just a teacher.
This year also saw the return of school trips. The trip to see Midsummer Night’s Dream was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, which was replete with all the right ingredients for a good time; laughter, a bit of culture, and being with others. Even the simple act of getting on a bus and chatting about the excitement of the day ahead was uplifting. The Middle School also went camping in Lago Di Vico. This was the first over-night trip in three years. The students enjoyed a wealth of activities, and spirits were running high.
It will be impossible to list all of the wonderful moments spent together this year. There is, doubtless, a constellation of moments spent together that will remain in the unspoken, hidden by the mystery of the ineffable. Much like every goodbye, seeing the Year 9s leave, as well as some other members of the school, is marked by a profound sense of the bittersweet. Indeed, it is a bittersweet taste in one’s mouth. Perhaps the pain of departure and separation is precisely what reminds us that we are alive, that our time together has a price and for this very reason it has value.
