Vikings, Raiders, Social Order? Our Time on Earth is only two seconds?!

In Year 7 we have begun our historical adventure with the Vikings! A scary (and hairy) barbarian, seafaring, axe wielding raiders from the North. Or are they? Year 7 are delving into the fascinating culture, society and technological prowess that were the Vikings. We are exploring their beauty, their beliefs and artistic proficiency. We have studied some Viking artefacts which tell us a lot more about Viking culture than we would have previously thought. Although they were savage raiders, we are discovering that these so called ‘barbarians’ were actually a well ordered, intelligent, artistic society.

In geography, we have studied how our planet had developed over the 14.8 billion years since the Big Bang. It began 4.5 billion years ago and a lot of stuff has happened since then. We start in Precambrian Aeon, where only soft bodied animals lived in the oceans and fast forwarded into the Phanerozoic Aeon in which we live today. This is split up into Eras such as the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, which are split again into smaller periods of time such as the Quaternary period in which we live today. Our planety has gone through an enormous amount of time since the Big Bang, infact, if we were to divide the Earth’s time in to a 12 hour period, humans have only been here for two seconds! Not just modern humans, ALL humans! We have barely been here at all!
