Year 8 have started their historical adventure with a topic very close to my heart – the Scottish Wars of Independence! A brutal, bloody campaign led by Edward I (Longshanks) to conquer and rule Scotland. But was it a success? Did the Scots just sit back and accept this foreign invader? NAE CHANCE! We look at the rebellions led by Sir William Wallace and Andrew Murray, the Battle of Stirling Bridge, the Battle of Falkirk and finish on the Battle of Bannockburn. Edward I liked to call himself ‘The hammer of the Scots’, but did he really succeed?
In geography, we have begun with glaciers. These huge rivers of ice have transformed our landscape worldwide and we had a good look at the natural processess that have changed our planet over thousands of years. Not only did we look at the natural processess (and drew diagram after diagram) we discovered how we use glaciers today. We climb them and skii them for our own entertainment; we study them to keep an eye on our climate; we control meltwater to help provide water for societies. They are monsters of the natural world and we have only scratched the surface of their secrets…
