Year Seven have been studying the sonnets of William Shakespeare. The culmination of their work was the creation of a book of sonnets of their own, replicating the quarto format in which the original sonnets were printed in 1609. Each student was tasked with writing a Shakespearean sonnet (also known as an English sonnet) that met all the criteria as follows:
iambic pentameter
three quatrains
volta at the start of quatrain three
heroic couplet
ababcdcdefefgg rhyme scheme.
The subject was love. This led to many sonnets dedicated to beloved mothers, but also fathers, sisters, and even family pets. The sonnets can be seen in the following slideshow:
