As you might have heard Acorn house school is trying to make improvements in the usage of plastic. In line with the Risa Plastic Reduction Campaign our main aim of the year is to reduce plastic to the minimum in every area of the school. Our goal was to find out what plastic our school bought this year. We carried out field research into each class in the school to discover how much plastic was being used. Obviously Early Years (Nursery to Year One) use plastic toys a lot more than any other department. It is safer, durable and reusable so it makes sense to use objects made from plastic in this department. Moving up through the school you can seen that plastic toys decrease and stationery plastic increases. This is due to students beginning to use more academic instruments. Although there is a lot of plastic utensils it is important to note that the majority of plastic in the school is reusable. As long as we reuse it we don’t contribute to the worldwide problem engulfing our oceans and rivers. In the future months we are going to look at ways to improve the usage of plastic toys in the younger classes and find if there are any realistic alternatives.
