This year we carried out an enquiry to monitor the school’s use of non- reusable plastic. We divided the tasks and gave out a questionnaire all over the school. We collected information and with this we found that the school uses less plastic in the lunchroom than last year. In 2018/2019, we used 9,180 plastic plates while this year we use zero! In 2018/2019, we used 45,000 plastic cups while this year we estimated we will use 9,612 (for popcorn at snack time). The number of plastic gloves used in the kitchen stayed the same between the two years. This shows that this year (2019/2020) we have reduced non-reusable plastic usage massively. Compared to last year (2018/2019), we have made major improvements. Most of the plastic that we use in the kitchen is reusable like chopping boards and plastic containers. This year we only use plastic cups to eat popcorn during snack, 3 times a month, and plastic gloves in the kitchen to make food. The school invested in bowls made from bamboo as you can see from the picture. This, again, highlights the intention of AHI’s changing approach to the environemnt. Last year in the cafeteria we were level 2, while this year we have jumped up to level 3. Maybe we could improve by using less plastic cups to eat popcorn, this will ensure there are no single use plastic objects in the school as a whole. We are very happy about our progress and hope to report even further movement throughout the year!
