AHI had its annual Sports Day, in which KS1, KS2 and KS3 students took part in various fun games. Like last year, the event was held over two days (Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 on May 31 and Years 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 on June 1)
May 31
KS1 (Years 1 and 2):
Years 1 and 2 students were divided into four teams, all led by a teacher. Friends and family who came to witness the event could see how our little athletes performed in the various games/ challenges which were presented to them. They simultaneously took part in four events (Flip it!, Bean Bag Throwing, Ring Throwing and Parachute Island) and then competed directly against each other in the final relay, which took place in the football pitch. All games required accuracy, agility, balance, speed, coordination but above all, team work. Seeing five and six year old children come together and cheering each other on was brilliant and I am sure those who were there appreciated how difficult this may be for children of this age. Every child put on a great performance. Hats off to them and to the teachers who guided them throughout the day.
After adding up all the points, the eventual winners were Miss Natalie’s Cheetahs, who were in yellow. Well done Cheetahs!
KS2 (Years 3 and 4):
This year was a little different for the lower KS2 students. Unlike last year, teams had to not only take part in isolated challenges, but they would also play against each other in other games / matches.
Students were divided into five teams, which were led, like in KS1, by a teacher. One team would be taking part in the isolated game (Bean Bag and Ring Throwing), whilst the other four would be battling it out in a game of ‘Tails’ and ‘Dodgeball’. Teams would rotate so they got to have the same number of turns.
All five teams were great. Trying to do their very best to gain an advantage for their team was excellent to see. Our children have come a long way in the last year and, when faced, were able to handle defeat very well.
The relay race was intense and very close. Every child did not want to disappoint and did their very best.
Mr Nick’s Lions, who also wore yellow, were the eventual winners. Congratulations Lions!
June 1
KS2 (Years 5 and 6):
Six teams battled it out on a very hot Friday morning. Handball, Dodgeball and Zoneball were all on the agenda. Team work, speed, agility and any other skill that one a could think of was on show, but what we tried to underline was sportsmanship. We wanted to make sure that students understood that fair play was essential for the day to work. Getting upset is evident when involved in a somewhat heated encounter, but what is important is what one takes from the experience. Certain values were tested throughout the morning, but it was generally a very competitive event.
Due to time constraints, teams could not face each other in every single game, but they all had a go at every game and those who were there could honestly say that they were pleasantly surprised of the energy the students had. Some students showed great movement, others great verbal communication and some produced great technique. A great blend of qualities.
The event, like the others, concluded with a relay race. It was fast, exciting and very intense. The relay race had a lot of jumping, running, crawling and above all, cheering. It was a lot of fun.
The Black Pelicans, led by a very enthusiastic Miss Nicole, came out on top. Well done Pelicans!
KS3 (Years 7, 8 & 9):
Handball, volleyball, dodgeball and a three-way rounders game were the four events in which our KS3 students took part in. With the aid of their magnificent teachers, the matches were disputed in great spirit and above all, everyone had lots of fun.
Time constraints again did not allow all six teams to play each other in every game but they all took part in a game of three way rounders (the three houses teamed up for this one). At the end of the day it was Mr Gale’s Blue team which won overall. Well done (again!)
