Last week the Preschool children attended a laboratory entitled the ‘5 senses’ at the Explora museum.
The children used their senses to become explorers: listening, smelling, touching, seeing and tasting to discover the world around them!
Sense of smell: after initial introductions, we started to explore the sense of smell. Through cups which were attached to a base, the children smelt different things such as mint, strawberry, chocolate and lavender. After this they explored in the pretend vegetable garden, planting and then collecting the potatoes, lettuce, carrots and peppers.
Sense of touch: In turns, the children put their hands inside two different boxes and had to guess what was inside: one was something warm (a hot water bottle) and the other something cold (some ice). They then had to spray warm water in to little containers full of ice to free a little bell which was frozen.
Sense of sound: During this activity the children were each given a card with an image of something that makes a sound. Then they listened to each sound, identified it and placed it in it’s possibile environemnt (the home, the city or the farm).
Sense of sight: On the over head projector, the children could see their shadows and made movements with their hands. They then listened to and watched a story about a man out on his bicycle starting from sunrise to sunset.
Sense of taste: we talked about the importance of a good breakfast and what the children liked to eat. They then went shopping in the pretend supermarket, filling their baskets with things they like.
