Brrrrrrrrr I am freezing!! It seems yesterday that we were playing in pista with our sandals, shorts and t-shirts. Anyways… Hi our beloved readers. How are you? Welcome back for our short update on how things are going here at Acorn House, more precisely: behind the first door on the right – Nursery – class 2017/2018. Well let me take off my jacket first and get comfortable because this month will be full of new and awesome things. First of all a couple of days ago, while I was walking up the hill, towards the entrance, I realized that everything is changing, I mean that is hard to explain but trees are changing their colors, it is as if they are getting undressed to wear new clothes, new leaves of a different color. Everything seems less summery and more wintery. That is probably why Miss Flavia, as soon as we got back to school on the 2nd November, decided to create “My First Autumn in a Jar.” We took a walk in the garden and collected and stored some sticks, acorns, leaves and small pinecones to see how nature is changing with the changing of the seasons. Nature seems more brown.
Miss Flavia is not the type of teacher that you would define “rational” in fact, after that scientific data collection (twigs, pines, leaves, stones etc…), she wanted to put a little bit of magic in our lessons so she turned a leaf into a wand that we had to blow to make it work.
Although she decided not to use all the magic she had in her pocket… she left some for the day after. You won’t believe it… she turned a Cd into a snail. Amazing! We named it “Sammy the Snail.” We liked Sammy so much that we asked her to add a story and share it with our parents.
Once back to school, after a rainy and windy weekend, we explored this new color I was talking about… brown. We drew our very first Autumn tree with falling leaves using paintbrushes and cotton buds.
But hey! With all this work we were starving… thank goodness Miss Flavia took a break and brought us to the kitchen to bake some apple pies, although we almost highjacked the cooking preparation eating some dough.
On Wednesday it was so windy that all the leaves were blown into our class… and Miss Flavia, (God knows if she ever calms down and decides to relax one second!), got excited and decided to stick some blue tape in the shape of a square on the floor and asked us to swipe them into the square… she said it was for our gross motor skills (I think she did not want to clean… that’s all).
Once all the leaves were collected we explored the world of science putting things into water and checking if they were going down or staying up… she mumbled something about floating and sinking but I did not get it right… it was 9.00 am maybe too early to talk about science.
However I don’t know if you ever noticed but when the sky is grey sometimes water starts falling down… now we know that it is called rain and to protect ourselves from the rain we use objects called umbrellas…
All this new information sometimes can confuse me but the only thing that I do know is that when water comes down from the sky I like its effect on the ground… I love jumping into puddles and ponds. As soon as Miss Flavia discovered this passion, that I share with all my buddies, she put our rainsuits on, lol!
Over the next days we explored some weather phenomena… we tried to reproduce what we see from our window when it rains and created a sort of mini-dictionary about weather with all its phenomena (wind, rain, snow, sun and clouds). However, since we are just toddlers, we wanted to explain to Miss Flavia that sometimes bad phenomena, as storms, can scare children and she instantly talked us out of it reproducing a storm in a jar and a cloud on our hands.
The next day we found a marvellous surprise on our floor… she wiped off the blue square and stick some puddles were we could actually jump on them without wearing rainsuits or boots.
Well well… another weekend is already gone! We went back right to the reality with the colors of the Autumn: orange and red. Miss Flavia made us paint a paper plate with a hole in it. She did not call it plate though, she called it /rith/ or something like that, sometimes I do not follow her she is too super-duper-excited about everything. Everytime she wants us to do something new she starts jumping and clapping her hands, I hope no one sees her through the window… that would be embarrassing. However on that strange plate we sticked some red leaves.
Then we tried to bake some biscuits in the shape of a leaf with the following ingredients (sugar, egg, oil, butter and flour). They were so good we ate them at snack time. The next day, while in pista, our teacher realized, while standing in the sun as usual (we call her “Ms. Sunny Lizard” but don’t tell her, it’s secret), she realized she had a little ladybug on her shoulder, she called us instantly and asked if we knew anything about this “thing” that she called an insect. Obviously our answer was negative and she started to jump towards our class inviting us to follow her and create our own little ladybug using black, orange and red colors.
The next two days we experienced a full immersion into orange color where we found out that it is possible to turn an egg carton into a flower and that bunnies eat carrots.
Alas November is gone too! We have to go now because Miss Flavia is explaining something about a new atmosphere in the air and while she talks she rings some bells… we’ll see what she has in mind this time!
