In Year 8, we finished the Scottish Wars of Independence successfully (as did my brave, brave ancestors…for a while anyway). Seen as the class were not scarred forever, nor put off their lunch with the graphic description of Edward II’s agonising death, we moved on to the inaccurately named Hundred Years War (it was 116)! We discovered how warfare changed a lot through this series of wars, and also, how pointless it ended up being for the English. The strength of the Welsh longbow was nothing, in the end, to the failed notion of fighting a war abroad – a notion still sadly adorned by the western powers today (they obviously didn’t have a good history teacher!).
In geography, we have begun to understand the world population, differences in countries and their populations and what problems we face as a society due to our rising numbers. We looked at cartogram maps to show the world in many different ways, such as population size not it’s land!
