Fun, fun and more fun is all the students had on AHI’s annual Sports Day. KS1, KS2 and KS3 students all took part in what was considered to be an eventful two days. The events were held over two days: Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 had their day on May 31, whilst Year 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 battled it out the following day.
May 31
KS1:
Years 1 and 2 were divided into four teams: Dragons (red), Eagles (yellow), Manatees (blue) and Meerkats (green). Each team was led by a teacher, with the aid of parents. They simultaneously took part in games, whilst being cheered on by the numerous family members who attended the event. The various games required the students to perform many skills that they had learnt and developed during their PE lessons throughout the year. There was also a competitive edge to the day, as teams were also playing for points. Accuracy, agility, hand-eye coordination, speed, balance, team work and constructive indications were just a few skills which were on show on the day. They excelled in every event, but above all, they had lots of fun. Parents and teachers also took part and impressed their children with their ‘not so rusty’ skills.
The event was rounded off with an obstacle course relay race, which everyone enjoyed. The Eagles, which were guided by Miss Elisa, came out triumphant but all four teams were absolutely amazing and cannot wait for next year’s event.
KS2 (Year 3 and 4):
Like KS1, Years 3 and 4 were also divided into four teams: Sharks (red), Stallions (yellow), Iguanas (blue) and Jaguars (green). Similar games were played simultaneously, but the level of difficulty was evidently greater. Students were very competitive but great sportsmanship and fair play was the clear winner. Parents also showed what they were made off by taking part in the numerous games being held. The previously mentioned skills were again on display and the students did not disappoint.
Yellow seemed to be the colour of the day as the Stallions, led by Miss Stella, were the outright winners. 
All in all, it was a great first day.
June 1
KS2 (Year 5 and 6):
The second day of events was slightly different to the first day as the students were divided into six teams: Emus (red), Deer (yellow), Newts (blue), Dolphins (black), Elephants (green) and Jackals (white). Three team games were played: Dodgeball, Hula Hoop Handball and Zoneball. Matches were very even and were played in great spirit. Seeing teachers amongst their players and encouraging them was amazing, even scary at times! Team work was the motto of the day and it was evident in the way students performed. Various skills learnt and developed throughout the year were again put into practice and it was wonderful to see. Players defending their own, helping one another, listening, communicating and accepting decisions, even if they were considered to be unfair, was evident throughout the day. A great sign of maturity. Parents were pleasantly surprised to see how their children were able to work really well individually but above all, collectively.
The final obstacle course relay race was brilliant as students had to overcome various challenges within a very short space of time. Quick reactions were needed to successfully complete the course. It was a very intense race, with children giving it their all for their teams and parents encouraging from the outside. All in all, it was great to see.
The outright winners of the event were the Newts, led by a very passionate Miss Torres.
KS3 (Year 7, 8 and 9):
KS3 students were also divided into six teams: Cheetahs (red), Lions (yellow), Bears (green), Gazelles (blue), Tigers (black) and Zebras (white). Like Year 5 and 6’s event, the six teams took part in three games: Volleyball, Hula Hoop Handball and Zonefrisbee. Again, each match was very intense and very close, so it was very difficult to pick a clear winner. The students played by the rules without any complaints and showed great maturity when faced with defeat. The skills shown, like in every other event, were ones which students had developed and improved throughout the course of the year. Some children, who found it challenging at the beginning of the year, were absolutely amazing and showed how much they had learnt.
The obstacle course relay race was no different to the others. Challenging, fast and fun would probably best describe the course.
As mentioned before, the matches were very close and the final race was also a close encounter, but the overall winners were the Gazelles, which were led by Mr. Gale.
I can honestly say that the event was very successful and believe that every single person involved in the event enjoyed themselves. Everybody worked together so that the event could run smoothly. Teachers and parents were great but the day belonged to our brilliant students.
